My administration will be pursuing this vision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rising food costs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe rising cost of food in particular has been a challenge for families that are already struggling,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWe have to start treating food access as core community infrastructure.\u201d She added that, among other ideas, the City is exploring the idea of a public grocery store.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>On history and hope: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilson noted the importance of Black History Month and that Ramadan is also celebrated in February this year: \u201cIn this season of reflection and new beginnings, I am so hopeful about what we can accomplish together. But that doesn\u2019t mean I look at the city through rose-colored glasses,\u201d Wilson said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe hope I feel comes from history. In 2017, less than three percent of parents declined Vitamin K. In 2024 more than five percent said no.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin K supports normal blood clotting and newborns are born with decient and breast milk is not an adequate source of it. Dosing a baby in the hours after birth protects them from potentially life-threatening hemorrhage. Not dosing at birth could have catastrophic results, which is why the single<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injection at birth has been recommended for six decades.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are pregnant, or know of a pregnant person, consider this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatricsinreview\/article-abstract\/41\/6\/305\/35408\/Vitamin-K-Is-Necessary-for-Newborns?redirectedFrom=fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitamin-k-deficiency\/faq\/index.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both recommend that all newborns receive a single intramuscular (IM) vitamin K injection shortly<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after birth to prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB)<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently in the U.S., there is no FDA-approved standard oral vitamin K regimen for newborns, but the most common international oral regimen is two milligrams at birth, followed by two milligrams at 4-7 days, followed by 2 milligrams at 4\u20136 weeks. Consult with your pediatrician regarding oral vitamin K.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects are minor and include temporary pain or redness at the shot site (usually the thigh), mild swelling or bruising, or short-term fussiness. Allergic reactions or infection are rare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risks of not giving your newborn the shot are also rare, but could be catastrophic. The risk of late VKDB is 1 in 14,000-25,000 births. Between 30% and 60% of infants with VKDB brain hemorrhage. The move effectively rolls back part of Washington <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5785&amp;Year=2025\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 5785<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which reduced the state\u2019s contribution for private college tuition support while leaving public college funding unchanged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal does not expand eligibility or add new recipients. Among the proposals that won\u2019t go forward:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/BillSummary\/?BillNumber=1834&amp;Chamber=House&amp;Year=2025\"><b>House Bill 1834<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would have barred social media companies from serving so-called \u201caddictive feeds\u201d to minors. It also would have restricted platforms from sending push notifications to kids overnight or during school hours without a parent\u2019s consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement, Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown chided lawmakers for failing to pass \u201ca commonsense proposal\u201d to protect children online. \u201cWe will not stop pursuing policies that can save young people\u2019s lives,\u201d Brown said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/BillSummary\/?BillNumber=6308&amp;Year=2025&amp;Initiative=false\"><b>Senate Bill 6308<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/BillSummary\/?BillNumber=6319&amp;Year=2025&amp;Initiative=false\"><b>Senate Bill 6319<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary\/?billNumber=1544&amp;year=2026&amp;initiative=False\"><b>House Bill 1544<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sought to address the child safety crisis at Washington\u2019s Child Protective Services (CPS) by, among other things, requiring stronger court monitoring of CPS cases involving children under 5 who remain at home with their parents and by creating a community-based referral system connecting families to services in cases involving children under 4 and exposure to high-potency synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary\/?billNumber=1152&amp;year=2026&amp;initiative=False\"><b>House Bill 1152<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would have established requirements for safe storage of firearms in vehicles and residences. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, a bill to ban guns in parks and other locations kids frequent (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5098&amp;Year=2025\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB 5098)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and another to ban<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use of 3D printers to create firearms<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary\/?BillNumber=2320&amp;Chamber=House&amp;Year=2025\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (HB 2320)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are still in the running.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary\/?billNumber=2389&amp;year=2026&amp;initiative=False\"><b>House Bill 2389<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sought to address overloaded juvenile detention facilities by, among other things, easing criminal sentencing for youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>TAKE ACTION: <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are the lost bills ones you care about and want to see brought to the 2027 session of the state legislature? It was approved by the full Senate on a 27\u201322 vote after hours of debate over whether the policy would make the state\u2019s tax code fairer or risk an exodus of wealthy residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal now heads to the House. If approved there and signed by Gov. Ferguson, the tax, estimated to add $3 billion a year to state coffers, would apply to household income, meaning married couples and registered domestic partners with combined earnings over that threshold would be subject to the surcharge. (Graphic: Washington Poison Control)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week I read <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/09\/opinion\/regulate-legalized-marijuana.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an opinion by the New York Times editorial board<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that gave me pause, and left me shaking my head in agreement.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The editors pointed out that daily marijuana use in the U.S. has climbed from about six million in 2012 to nearly 18 million today\u2014as has <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the number of people (youth and adults) with pot-related illness and marijuana-linked paranoia and chronic psychotic disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And another number has also risen. According to a <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/151\/2\/e2022057761\/190427\/Pediatric-Edible-Cannabis-Exposures-and-Acute?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 study published in the journal Pediatrics<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of edible cannabis exposures among children under age 6 increased by about 1,375 % from 2017 (207)\u00a0 to 2021 (3,054)<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=939110321552540&amp;id=100063607418609&amp;set=a.365266685603576&amp;utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Poison Center<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common calls we receive about cannabis is little kids mistaking an edible for candy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line for the NYT editors? They still support legalization. But there position has evolved and they now say the feds need to step in\u2014with a federal tax on pot, by restricting high THC and other harmful types of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marijuana and and by \u201ccracking down\u201d on spurious and unproven health claims about weed.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, Washington has been been forerunner in two of those three areas. In this state, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pot is subject to a 37 % cannabis excise tax along with regular sales tax (state + local), making Washington one of the heavier taxing states for legal cannabis. And while the state does not limit THC concentration in marijuana flowers and concentrates, it does limit each edible \u201cserving\u201d to no more than 10 milligrams of THC. In fact, Oregon lawmakers are considering mirror legislation right now to prohibit the sale of individual edibles that have more than 10 milligrams of THC. According to <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonstatestandard.com\/2026\/02\/10\/repub\/oregon-lawmakers-propose-capping-cannabis-edibles-at-10-milligrams-of-thc\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a report in the Washington State Standard<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week, in 2023, children ages newborn to 5 made up <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/full\/10.2105\/AJPH.2024.307789\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-third<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all cannabis-related cases reported to the Oregon Poison Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s good news when it comes to cannabis. Over the last decade teen use rates have not risen in King County or Washington state. They have gone down by most measures.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7302a1.htm?s_cid=mm7302a1_w\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC) reports declines in current cannabis use among King County students (grades 8\/10\/12) from 2008\u20132021; the Washington Department of Health\u2019s <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/doh.wa.gov\/newsroom\/2023-healthy-youth-survey-results-offer-signs-hope-and-resiliency-among-washington-students\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 Healthy Youth Survey<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes youth substance use stayed mostly stable post-pandemic, with current cannabis use around 8% among 10th graders.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Donald Trump supports states\u2019 rights to legalize pot. For once, I agree with him. If alcohol\u2014despite its well-documented health and social harms\u2014is legal and regulated, then marijuana should be treated the same way.\u00a0 I believe that added federal regulation of THC levels (my vote would be for lowering it to 5% in individual edibles), is an important next step and would go miles to discourage weed companies from creating new, stronger strains. <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006322316000457?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis has gotten significantly stronger<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the last 20 years\u2014cannabis growing is a business and it\u2019s bottom line is money, not addiction control. And yet, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/marijuana\/marijuana-addictive\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the newer strains of pot are addictive\u2014and that most addiction begins with teen use.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis companies don\u2019t care if a new strain is strong or addictive.
