Grandma’s strength, selflessness have changed two lives | Unsung Hero

Angela Schmidt took in her young grandson, and he has thrived.

Seattle’s Child is proud to partner with the state Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington to honor outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children. Throughout February, we’ll introduce you to Unsung Heroes from around the state. Enjoy their stories.

Angela Schmidt, Snohomish

Angela has taken phenomenal care of her grandson Landon for four-plus years while he has been in dependency.

Landon came to her as a scared, nonverbal 3-year-old. In her care, Landon has thrived. The difference is nothing short of inspirational. He has received regular health and dental care, and was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at 5 years old thanks to her persistence.

Angela advocates for Landon at school and has a close relationship with staff. When Landon started school he had an IEP with a laundry list of goals, 15 accommodations and a personal paraeducator. He is now in second grade in a general education classroom with no para and only one IEP accommodation. He is well liked and is reading above grade level and excelling in math. But perhaps more importantly, Angela has modeled and taught Landon healthy skills like good communication, kindness, personal hygiene and empathy. Through her patience and love, Landon is now a secure and happy 7-year-old with a solid chance at reunification with his mother.

Angela opened her home to her daughter (Landon’s mother) when she finished inpatient treatment and was unhoused in May 2025. His mother has lived with them for eight months and has maintained sobriety. It has been a difficult journey, but Angela’s strength and perseverance have impacted two lives astronomically. She has selflessly provided them both a soft space to land when things were hard and will continue to do so.
